Gertrude ‘Getty’ Kelly
Dedicated Mother, Grandmother and Great Granny
1935 – 2024
In Loving Memory of Gertrude ‘Getty’ Kelly
1935 – 2024
Gertrude ‘Getty’ Kelly, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born and raised in Cobh, County Cork, in 1935 as the youngest child and only daughter of Gerald and Mary Butler.
From a young age, Getty learned the value of hard work in a small farming family. She eagerly helped her parents, opening gates, and collecting milk from the cows. Starting School in 1940, Getty developed a passion for reading. Her favorite book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was a nightly ritual, and a little rabbit sewn from feed sacks by her mother Mary was her constant companion.
In 1950, at age 15, Getty won first prize at Cobh agricultural show with her prized cow, Poppy. This achievement fueled her dedication to farming, leading her to craft butter, cream, and cheese. Getty’s cheese became a local delicacy, and in 1953, at 18, she proudly opened her own cheese shop in Ballyvoloon.
In 1955, Getty met Jim Kelly, and according to Jim, it was love at first sight. They were married in a quaint church ceremony in 1956. Together, they had five children—John, Gerard, Sarah, John, and Peter—who blessed them with 14 grandchildren.
Getty’s joy grew further with the arrival of her great-grandson, baby Fiadh, in May 2020.
“Although you’ve left us, your memory lives on. Thank you for the great sacrifices you made for our family. You were the best wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother anyone could have ever asked for. We all love you so much and know Jim will be pleased to be reunited with you in Heaven.
